The plain answer

What Does MILF Mean? Meaning, Origin and When to Say It

Four dictionaries, one slang word, one practical rule.

The short answer

MILF is an informal word for a sexually attractive older woman, especially one who has children, according to Merriam-Webster. It is an acronym for a crude phrase about attractive mothers. Collins labels it vulgar, and none of the four major dictionaries gives an age in years.

What do the dictionaries say?

How four dictionaries define MILF
DictionaryIts wording
Merriam-WebsterInformal“a sexually attractive older woman and especially one who has children”
Dictionary.comSlang, US entry“an attractive older woman, usually a mother, who is regarded as a sexual object”
CollinsVulgar, slang“a sexually attractive middle-aged woman”
CambridgeNo label shown“a sexually attractive woman who is a mother”

They agree on attractive and little else: older, middle-aged or no age word, a mother or not. None puts a number on it.

Where it came from

Where does the word MILF come from?

Merriam-Webster gives 1992 as the first known use. Wikipedia cites the linguist Laurel A. Sutton, who says it was one of nine terms for attractive women collected from undergraduates in a Berkeley linguistics class in spring 1992.

Wikipedia adds that the 1999 film American Pie popularised it, and that screenwriter Adam Herz has said he did not invent the phrase.

Is MILF an insult?

Some people find the word objectifying or crude, so it matters who says it, and to whom. May Friedman’s 2014 paper in the journal Atlantis says the idea can look like an antidote to treating mothers as no longer sexual, then argues that it objectifies women and props up conventional ideas of motherhood.

Collins labels the word vulgar, and Wikipedia reports that some media outlets found it offensive to women. Use the words a woman uses for herself, and our guide to meeting a MILF respectfully shows how.

Cougar
Merriam-Webster labels it slang for a middle-aged woman looking for a younger partner, so it is about the age gap, not motherhood.
GILF
Wiktionary calls it vulgar slang for a grandmother, or less often a grandfather, found sexually attractive, modelled on MILF.
Yummy mummy
Wikipedia says it is used alongside MILF, and that the Oxford English Dictionary defines it as “an attractive and stylish young mother”.

How many Australian women are mothers?

  • 32.1median age of mothers at birth, 2024 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, ABS)
  • 292,318births registered in 2024 (ABS)
  • 3 in 4women aged 30 to 54 who had given birth, 2021 Census (calculated from ABS figures)

The first figure is the age at which mothers gave birth, not their age today, and the Census share counts the women who answered. Mothers are a very large and varied group. They differ in age, work, looks and taste, and a profile tells you more than a label does. See MILFs near me and the features page.

What does MILF mean? Your questions

What does MILF stand for?

It is an acronym for a crude phrase about attractive mothers, and Dictionary.com and Wikipedia print the full wording. Merriam-Webster defines the word as a sexually attractive older woman, especially one who has children, and labels it informal.

Is MILF an insult?

None of the four dictionaries calls it an insult, but some people find it objectifying or crude. Collins labels it vulgar, Merriam-Webster calls it informal, and a 2014 academic paper argues the idea objectifies women. Use the words a woman uses for herself.

How old is a MILF?

None of the four major dictionaries gives an age in years. Merriam-Webster says older, Collins says middle-aged and Cambridge uses no age word. The dictionaries leave it open, so read the woman’s profile rather than guess.

Does a MILF have to be a mother?

Not always. Cambridge says a MILF is a mother, Merriam-Webster says especially one who has children and Collins mentions none. Wikipedia says the word connotes an older woman, typically one with children. Do not assume, and let the woman tell you.
